What a difference a week makes. Apparently, the "untouchable" label has been lifted off of Utah Jazz guard Deron Williams as his name has surfaced in trade discussions around the league. Management has decided that upgrading the point guard slot is priority number one and are reportedly intent on acquiring an elite distributor to help bring the title home this June. One Eastern Conference official suggests that a Deron Williams' trade is still unlikely, citing the lack of "elite" guards available. He also mentions that Utah has held preliminary talks with the Clippers regarding Sam Cassell and are offering Ruben Patterson's expiring contract in return.
Speaking of elite guards, all signs point to Jason Kidd remaining with the New Jersey Nets past next week. In an ESPN interview, the Nets' GM seemed frustrated with his team's season thus far and hinted that changes are on the way. According to the interview, he states that "we definately must bring in some more all star calibur players". Reading between the lines, one can assume that they are looking to make one last push by surrounding Kidd with some more talent. It is believed, however, that if the Nets are unable to move deep into the playoffs this year, Jason Kidd could be on the move this summer.
It's official, the fire sale has begun in Indiana as the Pacers have made their entire roster available, including promising forward Danny Granger. As unorthodox as it seems, Indiana is now expected to be as active as any team this trade deadline. The Atlanta Hawks are one team that will surely contact the Pacers, as their well-known infatuation with Mehmet Okur could possibly rekindle a blockbuster involving Marvin Williams. As of now, it is unclear as to whether they are looking to trim future payroll or acquire more talent to make a playoff push. In the next few days, we should be able to see which direction management is headed.
After seeing the Jermaine O'Neal trade fall through, the Charlotte Bobcats have turned elsewhere in an effort to bring respectability back to their low-post. My sources have confirmed that the Bobcats have called the Sacramento Kings regarding the availablity of rising stud Tyrus Thomas but have been denied so far. Charlotte is trying their best to pry away the LSU product without including Paul Pierce or Vince Carter in any deal. The Kings have yet to bite and are most likely holding out for one of the above players to enter the trade conversations.
The Seattle Supersonics have made their intentions clear regarding upcoming free agent Rashard Lewis as they are content on re-signing him to a huge payday this offseason. There are still whispers that management is afraid to get into a bidding war during the free agency period and risk losing Lewis for nothing. For the first time this season, expect the Sonics to open their ears to offers involving the star forward since the Toronto Raptors are reportedly lining up to offer Rashard a monster contract when he hits the market.
