Controversial Trade Awaiting Trade Committees Fate
By Joe Some
The trade that has been posted by the Los Angeles Lakers with the Indiana Pacers isn't receiving very good rave from the members of the trade committee. The trade which is centered around elite power forward Carlos Boozer (along with SF Joe Alexander, FC Stromile Swift, PF DJ White, and SG Nicolas Batum) going to Indiana for PG Jameer Nelson, PF Paul Millsap, PF Tyrus Thomas PF Tim Thomas, SF Jorge Garbajosa and Indianas 2009 1st round pick. Their seems to be two major issues that all the members of the trade committee agree with on why this trade should not go through, they believe that the deal involves Indy giving up too much and their being " very little chance of re-signing" Carlos as he is a free agent this offseason. I wasn't able to get a face to face meeting with Indiana GM but was able to contact him over the phone.
Joe: First off I would like to thank you for your time Mr. McGowan
Mr. McGowan: Enough with formalities just call me Jimie, and sorry I couldn't be there in person.
Joe: That's alright, now on to the first question, the TC believes your giving up to much in this trade how do you feel about that?
Jimie: Well we are giving up a decent amount to get this deal to work but I feel the TC is undervalue players like Nicolas Batum and Joe Alexander. The main reason Nelson is in this deal is because it will help out our team salary for next season not because we don't value him.
Joe: Speaking of salary the other reason the TC doesn't seem to like this deal is they believe it will be unlikely for you to resign Boozer in the coming off season, any response to that?
Jimie: Yes I know it won't be easy to resign Carlos Boozer as it isn't with any star caliber player signing to a team with a losing history. The thing is though because of the players and their contracts in this deal we will have enough to offer Carlos Boozer $15,000,000 in the first year of an extension while still having $15,417,760 in cap space to go out and sign someone like Andrew Bynum, Mehmet Okur, Danny Granger, or Hedo Turkoglu. Think about it if you were an all star caliber player would you turn down a contract extension offer that started out at $15,000,000 while getting the chance to play in a front court alongside Andrew Bynum or Danny Granger?
Joe: Well I'm not an all star caliber player but that does sound very enticing. You seem to be willing to part with your upcoming first round pick pretty easily also, why so?
Jimie: I believe having the salary cap space along with a player like Carlos will be a lot more helpful than having a draft pick in a draft that is arguably very week after the top three picks.
Joe: Thank you for your time and good luck with the rest of your season.
Jimie: No problem.
