Much like how new crazes and phases wash over crowds and cultures and instantly everyone wants to be a part of the madness, the Miami Heat have become the new craze among the NBA culture. Miami has headlined in nearly every major sports publication this week, from the newly acquired, and highly publicized signing, of the star-studded staff and the trading of franchise player Brandon Roy (both featured on the D5 Media Banner), to the highly controversial first loss to rival New Jersey (also featured on Media Banner), everyone is talking about the Miami Heat organization. It's no doubt that right now everyone in the NBA's front offices and grand stands has one eye on the Heat and one thought about what exactly is happening in southern Florida. One fellow Eastern GM said:
"It's not exactly everyday a staff like that takes over a franchise. I mean, right now everything's pretty quiet but if you know that guy and his crew, they are cooking something up. I've been trying to predict what's going to happen and how to counter it, but you never know with them."
He was certainly right, and that something was star guard Brandon Roy being sent in GM James Hunter's first move. Roy was packaged in a deal to Toronto for Chris Bosh and Marc Gasol, both of whom Hunter had wanted for a long time. Matthew, James' assistant GM and brother, was quoted as saying:
"This deal finally gives us the big front court we need to contend. I'm very excited to see how this plays out for us."
However, Bosh's stay in Miami wasn't long at all. In fact, Bosh was told by his agent late Saturday night, just a few hours after learning of his trade to Miami, that he might be on the move again. Sure enough, Miami made headlines with another blockbuster trade that sent Bosh to Boston for Josh Smith and Rajon Rondo. At first, this raised eyebrows as to why Miami would do this as they already have Nelson at the helm. The answer to that question was answered later, when Miami yet again shook things up and startled the league when Nelson was dealt along with first year forward Anthony Randolph for Emeka Okafor. Okafor replaces Bosh at the four and Rondo takes over for point for the Heat with Smith, Richardson, and Gasol filling out the rest of the starting lineup. In one short weekend Miami went from a lineup of
PG Nelson
SG Roy
SF Radmanovic
PF Randolph
C Curry
To
PG Rondo
SG Richardson
SF Smith
PF Okafor
C Gasol
"I wouldn't say I'm afraid...okay, maybe I'm a little scared," a Western Conference GM said.
"Like I said," earlier quoted Eastern Conference GM said, "you never really know what to expect with these guys. All I know is Miami will be the talk of the league this year and this off-season. Right now, it is the 'it' place to be."
So go ahead, when you're alone in your room, practice the Miami Shake Down. You know you want to.
Everyone's doing it.
