Today around 4:30, the Nets signed center Rasho Nesterovic to a two year contract. The signing of Nesterovic makes the 10th one that Nets GM Josh Barber has made this offseason.
The other players include:
PG- Sam Cassell (73)
PF- Juwan Howard (71)
SG- Brent Barry (70)
SF- Ruben Patterson (70)
C - Francisco Elson (68)
SG- Doug Christie (70)
C- Rasho Nesterovic (67)
PG- Darrell Armstrong (70)
SF- Lamond Murray (70)
SF- Ime Udoka (68)
New Jersey Nets GM Josh Barber held a press conferece to talk about the offseason,
"Well, we made the trade to bring Grant (Hill) to Jersey, and it left us with no bench. I had complete trust in my ability to persuade the agents to sign players to this great team. It's really not that hard to get free agents when you have guys like Kidd, Bryant, and O'Neal. I guess the fact that we just won the championship didn't hurt much either."
The GM was then asked about the controversy surrounding the Utah Jazz's signing of free agent Bruce Bowen,
"Well, here's what happened. We made Bruce our number 1 priority going into the offseason. After negotiating with his agent for a while, the agent insisted that New Jersey was not the fit for Bowen because the man wanted a starting position. We were on the trigger of trading Grant Hill for an up-and-comming power forward, to accomodate Bruce Bowen. It seemed that he was in the bag for us. But, out of the blue, the agent and Bowen agreed to a contract for the minimum salary with the Utah Jazz, where he will be sitting on the bench behind Tracy McGrady. I don't understand it, but it is all behind us now."
Later when GM Barber was asked why he did not sign free agents Eddie Jones and PJ Brown, both of whom were key contributers to the title team last season, he had these remarks,
"Well, I actually tried to sign those two. But, these agents are pretty pesky. I think the agent had gotten into their heads that they deserve a bunch of money now that they are champions. I'd be suprised to see them get more than a million bucks each. I wish they would have come back, but it just wasn't going to happen."
Lastly, Barber was asked about the controversial contract that the Indiana Pacers signed Emeka Okafor to,
"I'm just glad he isn't on Chicago anymore."
