State of the Knicks
Here we are, two weeks into the young NBA season, and the New York Knicks are facing mediocrity at 2-3. The immediate future may seem bleek, however, recent moves have placed the Knicks in a position to dip beneath the league's salary cap this offseason, for the first time since the summer of the "100 million dollar man", Allan Houston.
The new general manager had this to say during the annual "State of the Knicks" address:
"They say you can't rebuild in New York, but that's what we're going to do. I hope the fans can understand that with the team I inherited, we would never win an NBA title with this group. It's time to take financial responsibility and build this thing from the ground up. We already have some solid young guys to build around, but we need to add lottery picks and top-tier free agents to our core. Be patient, this may take a few years to finally get some tangible results, but we will make it. I'm currently working on slicing our cap number so that we can not only be under the salary cap this offseason, but hopefully to a point where we will be one of the top players in the impending free agency. My goal is the same as yours, and that is to bring the championship home to the Garden, where it belongs."
Under new management, the franchise has parted ways with disgruntled, but talented, guard Steve Francis. Unfortunately, the cost of exchanging Francis's max contract, which is inked for 3 more years, for Grant Hill's expiring max contract included parting ways with promising forward/center Channing Frye. Frye, who struggled significantly last season after a stellar rookie campaign, was seen to be expendable with the emergence of David Lee and the surprising Renaldo Balkman. In terms of talent, the Orlando Magic clearly win this trade, but the financial burden of Francis's contract is stifiling. Stevie "Franchise" is still on the books for $48,680,000 over the next 3 years, while Grant Hill's maximum pact is scheduled to come off the cap this summer.
Also, the Knicks have shipped off budding star center Eddy Curry, along with a pair of second round draft picks, to Minnesota in exchange for the expiring contract of P.J. Brown, former lottery-guard Rashad McCants, as well as the Timberwolves' next two first round draft choices. At one point deemed the most untouchable player on the roster, Minnesota's offer was too good to pass up.
"They (Minnesota) really wanted Eddy bad. I basically told their GM that it would take an expiring deal, a young prospect, as well as draft picks for me to consider trading a talent like Eddy. It's tough to ship an amazing player like him out of town, but what we got in return is exactly what fits in with our quick rebuild scheme here in New York."
Believe it or not, the cap figure for the New York Knicks is projected to be $27 million under the salary cap this offseason. With their three highest salaries (Marbury, Hill, Brown) coming off the books this summer, the new general manager says he isn't content.
"There are still a few contracts I need to get off of our payroll. We're not done trimming salary."

December 3, 2006 Knicks to Grant 'Hill' Freedom? After back-to-back blowouts to the Pistons and then the Raptors, the New York Knicks (7-12) appear to be headed back into their downward spiral. Word out of New York is that the agent for former all-star Grant Hill is working feverishly with Knicks' management in an attempt to create a buyout for his client. When asked late last night of the speculated buyout discussions, Hill responded, "There's nothing going on right now so I'm not going to talk about it." Moments before the Piston's game two days ago, a local Detroit news outlet asked Hill if he would consider a comeback to the Pistons after his current contract expires this off-season. "I would love to come back here...at least I know that we would be competing for the title year in and year out." Hill continued, "If I had it my way, I would be playing in a different color jersey tonight." The Post was unable to reach Knicks management on the matter, however, the belief is that they are holding out hope that they can turn this season into a success. Logic would tell us that if the Knicks fade any further into oblivion, severing ties with Grant Hill would be the best option for all parties involved. Hill could sign on to a championship-caliber team, while the vacancy would open up more minutes for Luke Walton, Matt Barnes, and Renaldo Balkman. ------------------------------------- Knicks News and Notes- Rashad McCants is still recovering from a broken bone in his foot and is expected to miss at least the next two months of action.
- The bloated contract of Jerome James was jettisoned along with the LA Lakers 2008 2nd round draft pick in exchange for the expiring pact of Marc Jackson. Jackson is expected to take James' place on the injured reserve list until his contract comes off the books this summer.
- Stephon Marbury is now ranked 2nd in assists per game (7.2) and 3rd in steals per game (2.42). As for his impending free agency, "I'm not worried. I'll be back in the Garden next year and hopefully for the rest of my career." Knicks management has no plans of negotiating an extension with Stephon, or any other Knicks player, until the season has come to an end.

December 12, 2006 Dead in December?Last night, Paul Pierce and the league-worst Boston Celtics handed the New York Knicks their 6th consecutive loss. The fans began leaving the game after the third quarter, as their home-team had fallen behind by 22 points and showed no signs of coming back. Unfortunately, it seems as though that's how the season is going to end up. The Knicks have seemingly given up on their playoff aspirations and have set their sights on the off-season. With their latest trade, sending Kwame Brown to the Cavaliers for Rasho Nesterovic and a 2007 1st round pick, New York now possesses three 1st round picks, and one 2nd round pick in the upcoming draft. Management has begun scouting college prospects projected to land in the first round and early second round of the draft. As of now, it looks like New York is enamored with sharpshooter Morris Almond and shotblocker Sean Williams. The GM is expected to take a trip to Europe to scout such prospects as Marco Bellinelli, Rudy Fernandez, and Marc Gasol after the trade deadline has passed. It is still unknown whether or not he will be traveling to China to take a better look at lottery-bound Yi Jianlian. After nearly two weeks of negotiations, the agent for disgruntled forward Grant Hill and the New York Knicks have yet to reach a buyout agreement. It now appears as though the Knicks will simply release Hill outright since his contract is in its final year anyway. Hill will collect every penny of his near $17 million contract and be free to sign with any team. Meanwhile, either Matt Barnes or Renaldo Balkman are expected to replace Hill in the starting lineup when the release is official. Despite the vacant seats at the Garden, New York's GM remains optimistic that he is doing the right thing. "We have a solid young core, and we will be adding four more guys from the deepest draft in recent memory. We are going to have enough cap space to sign anybody that we want in the upcoming free agency. Actually, we could even hand out two maximum contracts and still be under the cap if we wanted to go that route. Be patient New York, this will be the place to be very soon." --------------------------------------------- Knicks News and Notes- Prior to trading Kwame Brown to Cleveland, the underachieving power forward was reportedly offered to the Atlanta Hawks, along with a young player or pick, in return for Marvin Williams. Atlanta was not willing to move Williams for any package that didn't include David Lee.
- The commissioner is contemplating whether or not there is enough evidence to fine the Knicks GM for alleged tampering involving upcoming free agent Rashard Lewis.
- New York is keeping an eye on Portland's Martell Webster, who according to an unamed source, is being shopped around the league after the acquisition of Kobe Bryant. When asked of potential interest, the Knicks' GM responded, "No comment." Apparently the Rashard Lewis incident has taken its toll.

January 6, 2007 Kobe to New York?As reported by numerous media outlets earlier this week, the Portland Trail Blazers have gone public about their intent to trade All-World talent Kobe Bryant before next month's trade deadline. Our own Peter Vecsey has confirmed from multiple league sources that the New York Knicks have indeed held trade talks involving the Philadelphia native. When asked directly of ongoing trade discussions, the Knicks' GM responded, "That's rediculous. We didn't talk to the Lakers when he was available then, and we most certainly have not talked to the Blazers now." Regardless, our sources indicate that any Kobe Bryant to New York scenario would have to include the nearly identical expiring contract of Stephon Marbury as well as promising sophomore David Lee. The Knicks have five first rounders between this year and next year as well as a plethora of young talent to offer. In other news, the Knicks' GM vows to be active this trade deadline. "Like every year around this time, big name players become available as teams start building for the future and dumping salary. And, teams that feel they are just one piece away from contending are now willing to pay a little more for a player they probably could of had cheaper a month or two earlier. We're going to keep our ears up and see if there's anything that might help our team next year." ---------------------------------------- Knicks News and Notes- Pending league approval, New York will be obtaining rookies Paul Millsap and Ronnie Brewer from the Memphis Grizzlies in return for Luke Walton and fan favorite Nate Robinson. Former University of Washington standout Robinson was quoted as saying, "I love New York, but I'm going to make them regret this trade. If I get some playing time in Memphis, the league better look out."
- The Knicks ended an embarrassing 10 game losing streak by topping the Sonics in Seattle last night, 112-103. Stephon Marbury led New York with 21 points and 7 assists.
- Knicks' management is reportedly getting frustrated with the injury that has sidelined shooting guard Rashad McCants for nearly two months now. With the expected arrival of Ronnie Brewer, rumors are floating around that McCants is a candidate to be dealt before next month's trade deadline. Of course, Rashad would have to recover from the injury prior to being traded due to league rules.

Star-buried?
For the first time all season, rumors are swirling around Madison Square Garden that perhaps Stephon Marbury might not be wearing a New York Knicks' jersey next season. Playing out the rest of his maximum contract, which currently pays out over $17 million, Marbury has been assured all season that he would be brought back with an extension during the free agency period. So why would the franchise turn its back on the Coney Island hero?
Contrary to earlier speculation which had the star point guard slated to make about $8 million per year, it is believed that Marbury is going to be looking for a multi-year contract that starts with at least $10 million. Apparently, Knicks' management is unsure whether they want to commit that much money to a player that has yet to win even one playoff game during his stint in the Big Apple. Granted this past season was a wash from the get-go, the previous three seasons have ended with much more to be desired.
Also, according to various media outlets, it appears that the Knicks are aggressively pursuing a successor to "Starbury". Despite having impressive rookie Mardy Collins already on the roster, New York has reportedly held discussions with the Philadelphia 76'rs regarding former high school phenom Louis Williams. It would seem foolish to have two young, up-and-coming point guards ride the bench behind Marbury for the next three or more years.
Look for New York to test the market before next month's trade deadline and possibly ship Stephon off to a title contender. It is believed that at least a half dozen teams have already inquired about the availability of Marbury, with three of those teams considered to be virtual playoff locks. Stephon could be the final piece to some team's championship puzzle and could be considered a low-risk, high-reward prospect with his expiring contract. If New York decides to hold on to "Coney Island's Finest", expect the Knicks to try and work out a sign-and-trade this offseason as they don't want to lose Marbury without getting anything back in return.

Lebron to NY Almost Done
According to several league sources with knowledge of the situation, the New York Knicks are set to acquire perennial All-Star Lebron James from the Cleveland Cavaliers. Cleveland is expected to be demanding former NBA champion Malik Rose in any deal. As the deal currently stands, the Knicks would be shipping off David Lee as well as a protected 2008 first round draft pick along with Rose to snag the disgruntled superstar. Expect some version of this trade to be consumated within the next 24 hours. Upon completion of the deal, our own Peter Vecsey will break down the blockbuster exclusively in the New York Post.

Cleveland.... you sound like a 12 year old pre pubecent girl who just found out she still needs to wear a training bra. Get over yourself. NY is one of the best posters here on this board, and if he makes a funny article that we all seemed to enjoy, there is no need to get your panties in a knot.
Also, please try making sense with your insults. It is "You're such a jerk," not Your. As a great man once told me... a loser is a person that can't spell loser properly. My final picking, "or maybe an ASS (ET) to such a team LIAR!!!!!!" What the hell does that mean? Are you asking him to stick ET up your ass or something?
