Coach Dick Vitale FiredDick Vitale was reportedly fired as the New Jersey Nets head coach. Vitale, who enjoyed his first season as an NBA coach last year, took the Nets to the championship, where the team beat the Jazz four games to one. The New Jersey Nets jumped out to a 10-0 record this season, before losing to the Sacramento Kings earlier today. GM Josh Barber had this to say about the firing, “Yea I fired Vitale. We have created a winning atmosphere here in New Jersey, and it is entirely unacceptable to lose to the Sacramento Kings. Coach Vitale knew the challenges that awaited him this season, and he just could not step up to meet them. We wish him the best of luck in the future.”Vitale could not be reached for comment. Reports on ESPN.com were coming in all morning as to who the new head coach would be. At 3:00 eastern time, GM Josh Barber held a press conference, where he announced that Alex Rodriguez would become the coach of the New Jersey Nets, “I would like to take this opportunity to announce the new coach of the New Jersey Nets, Coach Alex Rodriguez. [Rodriguez enters and shakes hand of Barber] We are very pleased that Rodriguez was willing to give up his career in baseball to come coach our great franchise. We know that A-Rod is a guy who will do whatever it takes to win.”
