Complete D5 power rankings!!
Starting with New Jersey's Top 10.
Preseason Power Rankings
1.
The defending D5 champions made some key moves this offseason. After signing veteran Shaquille O’Neal to a 3 year contract, the Hawks immediately traded him to the Charlotte Bobcats for Yao Ming, whom they traded for Josh Smith. The Hawks also traded defensive stopper Ron Artest for sharpshooter Kevin Martin, and Chauncey Billups for Paul Pierce. It is going to be interesting to see how well this team does with a new look. They will definitely win games, but the chemistry that these guys have is still going to be in question. Last season they were able to win with a bunch of superstars just thrown together, so the Hawks surely have high hopes this year, which is why they are number 1 in the rankings.
2.
Who needs a power forward anyway? The Dallas Mavericks have by far been the most successful team this offseason. The Mavs were able to sign veteran guards Steve Nash and Vince Carter, along with the most talented/controversial player in the league, Lebron James. This team is locked and loaded, and is going to make a lot of noise out West. If the GM can find someone to slot into the power forward position who can contribute defensively or can shoot from the perimeter, this may just be the best team in the league. Only time will tell.
3.
The Spurs have never really seemed that great on paper, but they have been the most successful team in D5 history for one reason: defense. This team might be getting old, but they still managed to win 70 games last season. I do not predict that they will be quite that good this year since the loss of (overrated) Rasheed Wallace, but they should still be able to compete in the new-look Western Conference. This team does and always has had the best chemistry in D5, and they are ready to show it once again.
4.
The New Jersey Nets were the surprise team of the playoffs last season, but won’t be surprising many people this year. The Nets have a very complete lineup, and a frontcourt that is to be reckoned with. After trading Danny Granger for Al Jefferson early into the offseason, the Nets GM made a somewhat strange move when he sent veteran Andrei Kirilenko away for the declining Mike Dunleavy. This trade, however, gave the Nets enough cap room to sign Ray Allen this offseason, which looks to be a huge addition to the team. Not to mention, they have Dunleavy (79) and McDyess (78) on their bench.
5.
Rounding out the top 5 is another team from last season’s most successful division, the Boston Celtics. The Celtics roster looks very similar to last season except that it is now more complete. The Celtics’ GM was able to trade Russell Westbrook for OJ Mayo just before the season ended, giving the team a more complete lineup. However, the team didn’t really have time to mesh, and ended up getting knocked out in the 2nd round of the playoffs. Now, the Celtics are back, and have a season of experience under their belt. Like the Nets, this is a young team on the rise that can win games, but is also already in place for many seasons to come. Watch out for the Atlantic!
6.
The Hornets are one of D5’s least talked about teams, and it is probably because they have not had a stable GM in quite some time. However, the players are going to be lacing up regardless, and this team is packed full of heavy hitters. The veterans on this team should have an entire season to get it together, unless a solid GM comes along, and they are going to have to use that season really well, because half the team expires after this year. Either way, this team should win a lot of games and be able to make a run in the playoffs.
7.
It started getting hard to pick who to put next at this point, but the Nuggets have put together a very interesting lineup. Andrew Bogut is quickly becoming, if not already, a top 5 center in the league. Carmelo Anthony is Carmelo Anthony, and surrounding those two with guys like Gerald Wallace and Blake Griffin frightens everyone who visit’s the Pepsi Center. This team has scoring, defense, and a complete roster. Watch out!
8.
?
I couldn’t really decide where to put the Jazz, but I ended up penciling them in at 8. This team is historically very competitive in D5, but poor planning for the offseason has them in a sticky situation. The GM chose to clear cap room to resign Kobe Bryant after the playoffs instead of before, and the lack of urgency has definitely translated to this roster. The team had to trade away Josh Smith and Jermaine O’Neal for practically nothing in return, which has left the frontcourt completely devastated. Elton Brand, a washed up 6’8 power forward has a huge load on his shoulders, and I personally do not believe he is going to be able to carry the load all season. This will surely be an interesting season for the Jazz.
9.
Alright, this team is going to win a lot of games. Until T-Mac’s rating gets changed. Personally, I think the signing of T-Mac was probably the worst of the offseason. More than $33 million over 5 years is a lot for a guy who can’t stay healthy and can’t score the ball when he is. Either way, the Wizards were getting desperate and have put together a great looking lineup to start the season with. The frontcourt is one of the best in the league, which always seems to be important in D5. This team is better than they were last season, but only time will tell how much they improved.
10.
The Knicks are a big team with a lot of talent. Jason Kidd and Dwayne Wade were one of the best backcourts in the league last season. I really liked the trade of Yao Ming for Pau Gasol for the Knicks. Gasol gives the team a lot more versatility and he seems like a much better pair with Wade. Jason Thompson and Grant Hill are the weak points in this lineup, but they both should be solid roleplayers and this Knicks team should easily make the playoffs yet again.
The Middle 10
11. Minnesota Timberwolves
PG: Baron Davis - SG: Hedo Turkoglu - SF: Shawn Marion - PF: Antawn Jamison - C: Amare Stoudemire
This team could easily be in the top 10 and will likely find themselves there many times throughout the season. They are a very big team and they don't have any real weaknesses. What they do lack is a player capable of taking over a game when a win is at stake. The T-Wolves will be a lock for the playoffs but will have to fight their way to homecourt advantage.
12.Cleveland Cavaliers
PG: Chris Paul - SG: Ben Gordon - SF: Andre Igoudala - PF: Udonis Haslem - C: Tyson Chandler
The Cavs are led by Chris Paul and have one of the best PG, SG, SF combinations in the league. If they match their #3 seed from the playoffs last year I think they should be happy with what they accomplished. Their problems start down low, with Haslem and Chandler they have two very hard working post players but both of them lack offensive skills. When they have to go agianst the Howards, Nowitzkis, Boshes and Gasols of the world expect them to struggle.
13.Toronto Raptors
PG: Derek Fisher - SG: Brandon Roy - SF: Richard Jefferson - PF: Jermaine O'neal - C: Marc Gasol
The Brandon Roy led Raptors should be guarenteed to improve on last season's 29 wins. They have gone from nearly losing Roy in free agency to being one of the deepest teams around. Lucky for them Roy did not opt out and along with their starters, Jeff Green and Eric Gordon make this team 7 strong.
14.Milwaukee Bucks
PG: Jonny Flynn - SG: Stephen Curry - SF: Yi Jianlian - PF: Zach Rondolph - C: Emeka Okafor
Led by two of the most promising young guards around, the Bucks should find themselves in the playoffs. The bruising Zach Randolph will need to be a force for this team to reach their full potential. They don't really have a small forward as they could use an upgade over Yi. They aren't ready yet but the Bucks have the peices that can put them into contention
15.Orlando Magic
PG: Chauncey Billups - SG: Matt Barnes - SF: Hakim Warrick - PF: Taj Gibson - C: Dwight Howard
There is a lot of confusion in the middle but they are bookended by two of the most reliable players in basketball. Billups is a top notch leader while Howard has only missed 3 games in his career. Taj Gibson is an up and coming post player and with Dwight as his mentor the Magic should have the most feared key in Dynasty Five.
16.Los Angeles Lakers
PG: Rajon Rondo - SG: Josh Howard - SF: Rudy Gay - PF: Paul Millsap - C: Joakim Noah
Rajon Rondo, Rudy Gay and Joakim Noah make up the great young core that is the Lakers. If the cracks can be filled this team should be a championship contender in no time. Keeping Rondo and Gay this summer was key for the Lakers and allows them to continue upwards to the level where everyone is used to seeing them.
17.Golden State Warriors
PG: Brandon Jennings - SG: Monta Ellis - SF: Nicolas Batum - PF: David Lee - C: Andris Biedrins
Nothing really sticks out with them, but if Jennings and Lee continue to improve them who knows where this team could end up. They seem to be team that is a great supporting cast. The problem is they lack their superstar. With Melo and Durant hitting the market next summer expect the Warriors to be right in the thick of things.
18.Sacramento Kings
PG: Mike Bibby - SG: Allen Iverson - SF: Michael Redd - PF: Channing Frye - C: Yao Ming
Bibby, Iverson, Redd and Ming are huge question marks for the future of the Kings. If Yao can get healthy then he can be dominant but it seems as though they have a few to many aging stars for them to really achieve something. I would expect them to go into a rebuilding phase if they can't sort this out.
19.Houston Rockets
PG: Russell Westbrook - SG: James Harden - SF: Ron Artest - PF: Kevin Love - C: Troy Murphy
The Rockets have one of the best young backcourts in the league with Westbrook and Harden. Add in Kevin Love and the future is bright in Houston. What they are seriously lacking is a true center. When the can find their man in the middle expect them to make a major leap towards a championship.
20.Charlotte Bobcats
PG: Andre Miller - SG: Jason Richardson - SF: Tayshaun Prince - PF: Andrei Kirilenko - C: Shaquille O'neal
If this team is to make the playoffs they will have to really over-acheive. Shaq and AK47 aren't what they used to be and Jason Richardson can't carry a team. Add that with the fact that they are in the tougher Eastern Conference and it figures that this team will be lottery bound.
The Bottom 10
21.Detroit Pistons
PG: Mo Williams - SG: JR Smith - SF: Corey Maggette - PF: Charlie Villanueva - C: Nene
The Pistons have five adequate players but nothing special. They will probably be around the 10th pick all season and hopefully they can build off of the Paul George selection from this season. They could suprise us and make a run at the playoffs but I think there is just too much of a gap for them to get in.
22.Oklahoma City Thunder
PG: Devin Harris - SG: Trevor Ariza - SF: Danny Granger - PF: Lamarcus Aldridge - C: Marcin Gortat
Next we have the Oklahoma City Thunder. Danny Granger's team have an outside shot at the playoffs since they are in the weaker west but I doubt they will make it. They need a few more players before they can be looked at as a legitimate threat.
23.Philadelphia 76ers
PG: Derrick Rose - SG: Jamal Tinsley - SF: Jamal Crawford - PF: Tyrus Thomas - C: Mehmet Okur
Bringing up the rear in the powerhouse Atlantic are the 76ers. They will be carried bt Derrick Rose but have some okay pieces around him in Crawford and Okur. They really need a true small forward and could use some better talent down low.
24.Miami Heat
PG: Kirk Hinrich - SG: Thaddeus Young - SF: Ersan Ilyasova - PF: Andrea Bargnani - C: Greg Oden
Their success lies with their bigs. Andrea Bargnani should see continued improvement but Greg Oden needs to live up to his potential for the Heat to be successful. They should be looking for a true shooting guard when the draft comes around.
25.Phoenix Suns
PG: Aaron Brooks - SG: Rudy Fernandez - SF: Corey Brewer - PF: Danilo Gallinari - C: David West
This team has the talent to be much higher on this list but they lack a true center. They will get beat up down low unless David West grows 3 inches and Gallo miraculously develops a post game. They should be lottery bound either way.
26.Los Angeles Clippers
PG: ? ? ? ? - SG: Evan Turner - SF: Wilson Chandler - PF: Derrick Favors - C: Chris Kaman
This team could be a lot higher if they find a respectable point guard. But for now they have to find someone out of position to fill the void. Either way they have a lot of good young talent from Kaman to the 2nd and 3rd picks in Evan Turner and Derrick Favors.
27.Portland Trailblazers
PG: Derren Collison - SG: Joe Johnson - SF: Andres Nocioni - PF: Kenyon Martin - C: Serge Ibaka
The Blazers better hope Kenyon Martin stays healthy. He is not the best power forward to begin with and there isn't much behind him. Joe Johnson is nice but he can't carry this team. Collison and Ibaka will become good players but they need time.
28.Indiana Pacers
PG: John Wall - SG: DeMar DeRozan - SF: Morris Peterson - PF: Al Horford - C: Spencer Hawes
This is John Wall's team and they will go as high as he takes them. They have many nice young players and should develop into one of the better teams in a few years. But for now they need time to become that team.
29.Chicago Bulls
PG: George Hill - SG: Rip Hamilton - SF: James Posey - PF: Boris Diaw - C: Nick Collison
LeBron James left this team in shambles. The trouble is they weren't good to begin with. They have a good young point guard in George Hill and the aging Rip Hamilton but that is it. Not one post player is worth mentioning and they have no true centers as both Diaw and Collison are playing a position up.
30.Memphis Grizzlies
PG: TJ Ford - SG: Gerald Henderson - SF: Peja Stojakovic - PF: Ed Davis - C: DeMarcus Cousins
A lot has changed since last year when they had no future and Gerald Henderson was their best player. There is still a whole lot more work to do though. With 12 players with 2 years experience or less the Grizzlies have gone young and fast. This team will experience trial by fire but don't expect success for a while.
Starting with New Jersey's Top 10.
Well, most of the big name free agents have signed with a team now, so I decided to throw together a little preseason top 10 power rankings. Mad that your team isn’t on here? Think I’m wrong about something? Post it! Let the discussion begin!
