More of the Same
During a season which a lot of new faces appeared in the playoffs, it looks like we are back to more of the same. This year’s conference finals will feature the Spurs vs. the Jazz in the West, and the Hawks vs. the Nets in the East. Sound familiar? Let’s look at some interesting stats.
-- In Dynasty Five’s four year history, none of these teams have ever failed to make the playoffs.
-- None of these teams have ever finished the season with a losing record
-- The teams have combined for two of D5’s three champions
-- Of D5’s four Conference Finals, these teams have combined to take up 8 of the possible 16 slots
-- Only 2 teams outside of these four have ever participated in a D5 Final (Pistons and Suns). This means that these four teams have combined to take up 6 of the possible 8 slots in the D5 Finals (including this year).
So, do we have any reason to be surprised that these teams are here again? You don’t if you live out West. The clear cut favorites the entire season, and even preseason, have been the Spurs and Jazz. The two teams are a combined 16-0 in the playoffs this year. Even with newcomers like Sacramento and historically competitive teams like Warriors and Suns trying to make a push, these two teams have prevailed yet again, and it is sure to be an amazing series.
What about the East, though? The Atlanta Hawks expected to be here from the get-go. Despite making some mid-season moves, the team is still performing at the level that got them to the NBA Finals last season. The number 1 seed has lost only 1 playoff game this year. But, what about the Nets? The roster looks good, but no one expected New Jersey to be playing this late into May. The Nets have had to overcome a 3-1 series deficit against the 3 seed Cleveland Cavaliers, and then took over in the second round against the New York Knicks, stealing game 2 in New York and then taking care of business at home.
So, where do we go from here? The Jazz and Spurs have played two series against each other, each team winning one. The Nets and Hawks have never met in the playoffs. Want some predictions? Well, by my book, its going to be even more of being more of the same. The Spurs should be the clear favorites to win the NBA championship, and I think they will do so. The Jazz will put up a good fight, but the Spurs will win this series 4 games to 2. The Spurs will meet the Hawks in the finals for the second straight year. The magical run for the Nets has to stop eventually, and this Hawks team has all the tools to do just that. The Hawks will take this series 4 games to 2 as well.
