Walking into a new situation can be a daunting task. Walking into a situation that has a history of winning, and the pressure is palatable.
But that is exactly the situation the Phoenix Sun's new General Manager, Peter Nincompoop, a "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia" reference, walked into. The Suns have had a solid season thus far, including a league leading record and two players in the top 10 in scoring. But those facts will not satisfy him. "My philosophy really doesn't jell with what we have here, but who am I to break up a nucleus that has been winning. I tend to build teams around youth and a style of team ball, that usually runs and plays solid defense." A style that is evident in his hiring of Head Coach Rick Carlisle.
"I'm looking to not break this up to a point that will put us back 3-5 years. We can win now, maybe even with this roster, but I'm a greedy person, I want to build a consistent championship contneder and put the guys in that can lead the organization to 3-4 titles in the next 5 years. "
Strong words from a man who has been on the job all of 24 hours. Asked what his plans are to fulfill his dreams he simply said, "You'll just have to tune in and find out." But for what its worth, this reporter won't be surprised to see a move to get a new point guard, and some moves to get younger, including moves for a new shooting guard and big man, more athletic, and deeper. Those seem to be staples on Nincompoop's resume, which includes runs as the General Manager of the Miami Heat and Portland Trailblazers in various other leagues.
Here's to hoping that this new GM doesn't make too many moves that take this team out of title contention. And with any luck, we will be able to see a consistent playoff team and solid title contender in the near future and for years to come.
